They wrote it on the Halloween night when they first jammed together. It is track number 13 on their debut album, Soul of a New Machine. Perhaps because it is one of their earlier songs, it does not have Fear Factory's trademark keyboard influence so it does lend itself a little more to live performance. Because it is a more "playable" song (so to speak), do not deceive yourself: it is still very trying and very difficult. If your right (picking) hand is not well-trained in tremolo picking and downstroking, this will not sound anywhere near good when you try to play it, so make sure your picking strategies are up to par. A good thing to try with Riff A is string muting. While you play the notes, use your inactive fingers to mute the G string, so as to prevent unwanted feedback or accidentally hitting the string. Don't press the string all the way down on the fretboard; simply rest your finger on the string. For Riffs D, F, and G, you will need to tremolo pick. Instead of holding your pick in the traditional fashion (between the bottoms of your index finger and thumb), try holding the pick between the bottom of your thumb and the side of your index finger. This will allow you to increase your speed quite a bit. Guitars 1 and 2 both tune all strings down a perfect fourth (B, E, A, D, F#, B) LEGEND: ^ -- bend up * -- palm-mute H -- hit-on P -- pull-off ~~~~ -- vibrato A.H. -- Artificial Harmonic N.H. -- Natural Harmonic \ -- slide down / -- slide up Tempo begins slow, and then speeds up significantly Riff A (played by guitar 1) Pre-bend (bend the G-string up a half-step, hold, and then begin to pick) on the first note, and then gradually lower the string back to its normal pitch after about twenty strokes. ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^
