I don't feel that is likely how they played it in the studio, but it gets you the same notes. You need that D below D, and dropping the low B to get there makes more sense than trying with a 6-string unless you have a baritone. Either way, the down octave pedal is the best way to get this effect. That's it for the song though. There are really intense riffs and dissonances.
