Song: The Ballad of Hollis Brown Artist: Rise Against (Original version by Bob Dylan) Album: Long Forgotten Songs; B-Sides & Covers Tabber's Email: [email protected] This song doesn't necessarily have verses and choruses as such, so I'm just going to tab out the different bits and put in their related lyrics, so you know where they go! Also, I feel that this is a good song for learning about dynamic picking strengths, as there are parts that can be played hard to emphasise them as in the song. All guitars tuned a half-step down. (Intro and played throughout) the "230" bit is strummed througout this bit, but you should have been able to hear that in the song anyway (A) G1 (G2 optional) d#|---0-----------------------------------------------------------| A#|---3-----------------------------------------------------------| F#|---2--------3-0------------------------------------------------| C#|-0-------0-----------------------------------------------------| G#|-------3-------------------------------------------------------| D#|---------------------------------------------------------------| This part is played every two or three repetitions of (A). You should be able to hear it in the song. (B) G1 (G2 optional/playing G2 specific) d#|-----0--------0-----0-----------| A#|-----3--------3-----3-----------| F#|-----2--------0-----2-----------| C#|--------------------0-----------| G#|---3-------2--------------------| D#|--------------------------------| "His cabin broken down" (C) G2 d#|--/10-13-----------------------------| A#|----------10\7-----------------------| F#|----------10\7-----------------------| C#|-------------------------------------| G#|-------------------------------------| D#|-------------------------------------| "Smile" (the really elongated one, as thought it wouldn't be obvious enough). Play this a good bit louder, but don't break your strings! (D) G1 + G2 d#|---0----------------------------------| A#|---3-----Let Ring Each Time-----------| F#|---2---x8-----------------------------| C#|---0----------------------------------| G#|---0----------------------------------| D#|--------------------------------------| "Every Breath you Breathe" Play this bit really softly (E) G1 d#|--2-2-2-3-2-----------0-------0----------| A#|--3-3-3-3-3-------------3--------3-------| F#|--2---------2----------------------------| C#|--0----------0------0--------0-----------| x2 G#|-----------------3---------2-------------| D#|-----------------------------------------| G2 d#|--------15\14--12\10-----------------| A#|-/12/15------------------------------| F#|-------------------------------------| C#|-------------------------------------| G#|-------------------------------------| D#|-------------------------------------| After the soft bit: (F) G1 d#|--0----------------------------------| A#|--3----------------------------------| F#|--2---Strum!-------------------------| C#|--0----------------------------------| G#|--0----------------------------------| D#|-------------------------------------| G2 (Bend so that it's like a quarter-step off key) d#|-------------------------------------| A#|--7----------------------------------| F#|--7--Strum!--------------------------| C#|--7----------------------------------| G#|-------------------------------------| D#|-------------------------------------| There's an extra guitar that comes in at the first "mare" and it goes something like this: G3 d#|------------------------------------------------| A#|-----12-10---12-10----12-10---------------------| F#|----------10-------10-------10----12--12--------| C#|---12--------------------------14---14--12~-----| G#|------------------------------------------------| D#|------------------------------------------------| But I'm not sure. It sounds weird and off-key. On the recording, the guitar sounds pretty bright, but I prefer to play this on a warm tone, but do as you please, and use whatever tone. All of this picking and stuff is fairly loose, so you don't have to be SUPER strict on yourself. Feel free to recommend corrections, etc, and make sure to rate this, even if it's just one star!
